Hawaii’s humidity and salt air ruin packing jobs that work perfectly fine on the mainland — cardboard wicks moisture, metal corrodes, and wood furniture cracks in ways nobody expects. Here’s what our Wurlitzer Moving crew actually reaches for on a Windward Oahu move.
Why Mainland Packing Advice Doesn’t Hold Up Here
Standard cardboard boxes absorb ambient moisture fast in island humidity, especially anything stored in a garage or carport near the coast for more than a few days. Plastic totes with gasket lids hold up far better for anything sitting before the move.
The same goes for packing paper against bare wood or metal — newsprint holds moisture against the surface it’s wrapped around, which is the opposite of what you want in this climate.
Electronics and Documents
Electronics need a true moisture barrier, not just a box. We pack them in sealed plastic bags with silica gel packets inside a rigid tote, never loose cardboard, and keep them off the garage floor where damp concrete can sweat through overnight.
Documents — passports, titles, financial paperwork — go in a waterproof document box that travels with you, not in the shipment. Don’t trust a cardboard file box for anything you can’t replace.
Wood Furniture and Humidity Swings
Solid wood furniture that sat in an air-conditioned mainland house can crack or warp when it hits island humidity, especially if it’s shrink-wrapped airtight in a container. We leave wood pieces breathable — moving blankets and stretch wrap, not sealed plastic — so moisture escapes gradually.
Upholstered furniture and mattresses need airflow too — plastic mattress bags trap humidity against the fabric if a move gets delayed even a day. We prefer breathable mattress covers whenever the timeline allows it.
Salt Air and Metal
Anything with exposed metal — bike frames, tools, patio furniture, gun safes — corrodes faster near the Windward coast than almost anywhere else on Oahu.
A light coat of oil or a corrosion-inhibiting (VCI) wrap on hardware before it’s packed for a week or two makes a real difference by the time it’s unwrapped.
| Item Type | Skip This | Use This Instead |
|---|---|---|
| Electronics | Loose cardboard box | Sealed tote + silica gel packets |
| Documents | Cardboard file box | Waterproof case, hand-carried |
| Wood furniture | Airtight plastic wrap | Moving blankets + breathable stretch wrap |
| Metal hardware/tools | Bare exposure | Light oil coat or VCI wrap |
- Swap cardboard for plastic totes on anything electronic or paper
- Pack silica gel packets into sealed containers
- Keep boxes off garage floors and away from exterior walls
- Wrap exposed metal hardware before container loading
- Hand-carry documents instead of shipping them
Windward showers move fast
Kailua and Kaneohe get trade-wind showers that turn a yard to mud with no warning. On moving day our crew tarps the walkway and stages boxes under the carport before anything goes outside — the packing only holds up if the path to the truck does too.
If packing everything yourself before a move sounds like too much to coordinate around the weather, our full-service packing crew brings the right materials with them.
Ask about it when you request a quote, or add short-term storage if your items need to sit in climate-controlled space before the next leg.
